How Often Do I Need an Eye Exam?
Our team at Oceanside Optometry Clinic recommends yearly eye exams for all adults and seniors. If you’re a patient with diabetes, we recommend annual diabetic eye exams.
Getting routine eye exams can help detect common eye concerns like dry eye, digital eye strain, and presbyopia. Presbyopia–which can develop in your 40s–is the gradual loss of your near vision. It can be corrected using multifocal lenses or reading glasses.
If you’re due for an eye exam, contact us today! Our friendly team would be happy to see you and answer any questions you may have.

How to Prepare for Your Eye Exam
During your eye exam, we may dilate your eyes. Dilation allows us to see more of your inner eye. More information about your eyes helps us detect eye diseases and conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataracts early.
If you get a dilated eye exam, we recommend arranging a ride home. Asking a friend or family member to pick you up after your appointment will help you get home safely.

What to Expect During Your Eye Exam
Whether you’re a new patient or one who’s been seeing us regularly, our team strives to make you feel comfortable before even beginning your eye exam. We’ll start by taking an in-depth history of your eye and overall health.
Next, we’ll check your vision and complete a binocular vision evaluation. This exam gives us information on how your eyes work together. We’ll also check your eye pressure. After determining your prescription, we’ll share our final diagnosis and answer any questions you may have. If your prescription has changed, we’ll help you find the right contacts or glasses that suit your needs and style.

Our Diagnostic Technology
We use our technology to provide thorough and precise eye care. Our diagnostic tools help us protect your eye health and vision and include:
- Visual field measurement and assessments that help detect blind spots and vision loss caused by glaucoma
- Modern glaucoma screenings that measure eye pressure for early detection of glaucoma
- Optical coherence tomography (OCT), which creates detailed images of the optic nerve and macula, helping detect glaucoma and macular degeneration
- Optos retinal imaging, which captures high-resolution images of the retina for monitoring eye health
- Pachymetry, which measures corneal thickness to assess glaucoma risk

Why Do I Need an Eye Exam?
Since many eye diseases don’t show early symptoms, getting a regular eye exam is crucial to protecting your vision. Conditions like digital eye strain and dry eye can be uncomfortable. Early detection of eye diseases and conditions can help preserve your vision.
Your eyes work hard every day, and routine eye exams are essential to keeping them healthy. Even if you have perfect vision, an eye exam assesses more than your visual acuity.
Our thorough, stress-free exams give you a clear understanding of your vision and eye health so that you can make informed decisions about your vision with confidence.
