Common Eye Emergencies
Knowing what counts as an eye emergency can help you respond quickly and protect your sight. Common emergencies include:
- Sudden vision loss or distortion
- Severe eye discomfort or redness
- Foreign objects stuck in the eye
- Chemical exposure
- Flashes of light or sudden increase in floaters
- Eye trauma from a fall or sports injury
- Signs of infection (like discharge, swelling, or crusting)

Types of Eye Emergencies
Eye emergencies can include sudden vision changes, injuries, or infections.
- Flashes and floaters can indicate a retinal tear or detachment. If you notice a sudden increase in floaters–especially with light flashes–seek care immediately.
- Eye injuries from blunt force trauma, corneal abrasions, or chemical exposure require quick attention. Flush chemicals with water for at least 15 minutes and avoid rubbing injured eyes.
- Infections like conjunctivitis (pink eye) cause redness, itching, and discharge. Bacterial cases may need prescription drops.
- If a foreign object is stuck in your eye, avoid touching it and seek help immediately.

Preventing Eye Injuries
Taking a few precautions can help you avoid eye injuries at home, work, and while playing sports:
- Wear protective eyewear: Safety glasses can protect against debris and impact injuries.
- Follow safety guidelines: Always handle chemicals and tools carefully to avoid splashes or flying debris.
- Be mindful of child safety: Keep sharp objects and harmful substances out of reach of children.
While looking at your digital devices may not cause an eye injury, we recommend taking screen time breaks. Resting your eyes regularly can reduce strain and dryness.
